Owing to the current lack of organically propagated seeds, organic seed producers are forced to cultivate seeds using non-organically produced basic seeds. Since these basic seeds are propagated using organic farming methods, they receive certification and are then planted by organic farmers. According to Article 6(2b) of the EU Directive on the organic production of agricultural products, foodstuffs for animal or human consumption whose seed certification has been revoked cannot be marketed as organic products since, in their capacity as mother plants, their conventionally propagated basic seeds do not meet the criteria of having been grown organically “for at least one generation.” |
Zur Erzeugung von Öko-Saatgut müssen die Öko-Vermehrungsbetriebe - mangels Verfügbarkeit von ökologisch erzeugtem Basissaatgut - auf konventionell erzeugtes Basissaatgut zurückgreifen. Dieses Basissaatgut wird nach den Regeln des Öko-Landbaus vermehrt und findet als Z-Saatgut Verwendung bei der Aussaat im ökologischen Landbau. Aberkanntes Z-Saatgut dürfte nach Artikel 6 Abs. 2 Buchstabe b der EG-Öko-Verordnung nicht als Öko-Lebens- oder Futtermittel vermarktet werden, da das konventionell erzeugte Basis-Saatgut als Mutterpflanze nicht die Voraussetzung erfüllt „zumindest während einer Generation“ ökologisch erzeugt worden zu sein. |
